Mindfulness has emerged as a growing movement in education, and for very good reason. Schools and educational institutions worldwide recognise the value of integrating mindfulness practices into their curriculum and staff well-being initiatives. Research has shown that mindfulness can reduce stress, enhance focus, and promote emotional regulation – all essential qualities for educators navigating diverse and challenging classroom environments.
Let’s explore some mindfulness and self-care practices tailored to our unique profession to foster resilience, balance, and overall well-being.
Daily Mindful Moments
Incorporate brief moments of mindfulness throughout your day. Pause for a few minutes to focus on your breath, sensations, or surroundings. Embrace these mindful breaks to re-center and reduce stress.
Design Your Energising Morning Routine
Start your day with an energising morning routine that includes light stretches, a nourishing breakfast, and positive affirmations. This sets a positive tone for the day ahead.
Mindful Eating
Pay attention to your eating habits by engaging in mindful eating. Savour each bite and be aware of the tastes and textures of your meals. Mindful eating enhances digestion and promotes a healthy relationship with food. Taking three deep breaths before eating signals to the body that it’s time to relax and focus on digestion.Mindful Listening
Practise mindful listening during conversations with colleagues, students, and loved ones. Be fully present, giving them your undivided attention and fostering meaningful connections.Breathing Exercises
Incorporate deep breathing exercises into your daily routine. Take a few moments to engage in diaphragmatic breathing to reduce stress and promote relaxation.Regular Physical Activity
Engage in regular physical activity that you enjoy, such as yoga, walking, or dancing. Exercise not only improves physical health, but also boosts mood and mental clarity.Unplug and Reconnect
Set aside time to unplug from electronic devices and reconnect with nature, hobbies, or loved ones. Disconnecting from technology fosters a sense of grounding and balance.
Establish a Wind-Down Ritual
Create a wind-down ritual before bedtime to relax and signal your body that it’s time to rest. Consider reading a book, practising gentle stretches, or engaging in soothing activities. Disconnect from digital devices 2 hours before bedtime.
Prioritise Restful Sleep
Prioritise restful sleep by establishing a consistent sleep schedule and creating a relaxing sleep environment. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night to support your overall well-being.

About the Author
Kate is an award-winning author who has published seven books both nationally and internationally. Her novels are so highly regarded that five of them have been included in the Curriculum Council’s Recommended Reading Lists for secondary students in schools across Australia. With 28 years of experience as an English and Literature teacher, Kate has gained valuable insights into the challenges facing English teachers.
Despite the technological advancements in teaching, Kate found that the marking burden on English teachers remained a challenge. In 2019, Kate published her first non-fiction book, The (mostly) English Teacher’s Survival Guide to Marking, where she introduced a coded marking system that allowed teachers to maintain a better work-life balance while also benefiting students by showing them how to improve and Feed-Forward to their next assessment.
After learning that her coded marking system had saved teachers up to 40% of marking time, Kate and her husband Nick decided to work with a team of software developers to create an online application that would revolutionise current marking practices. MarkSmart was born from this collaboration, making marking easier and more efficient for English teachers.
